Business are deeply intertwined with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) concerns. It makes sense, therefore, that a strong ESG proposition can create value. This is an increasing trend for companies, like the Asturian (Spain) company Alimerka, that has been recognized as one of the ten large Spanish companies considered exemplary for their commitment to the climate in their decarbonisation strategies. The recognition comes from the initiative 10+10 Business Examples #PorElClima, which aims to contribute to the implementation of the Paris agreement in Spain. Alimerka only consumes green electricity with guarantees of origin, it has the largest photovoltaic installation in the north of Spain in its logistics center and solar panels in all its points of sale that allow it. In addition, its fleet is made up of LNG and electric trucks, and it also uses electric vans for home delivery orders. In this much more restrictive edition, as only 20 initiatives are awarded, Alimerka has been recognized for its project "360º Decarbonisation of the supermarket", which includes its business strategy in terms of sustainability, applied to all processes.

Its fight against climate change is completed with support for the environment and biodiversity. In 2021, the Alimerka Forest was planted (4.5 hectares of native species in Asturias region) in an area of special relevance for the conservation of capercaillie and bear.

The company's own philosophy, which since its inception has been committed to fresh and local products and collaborates with a wide network of local suppliers, favours the reduction of emissions and affects the development of its environment in a respectful and responsible manner.

All these projects have earned Alimerka numerous awards, being the first food retail company to have the seal of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge: "I calculate, I reduce and I compensate". In addition, it is one of the companies distinguished with three Lean & Green stars (granted by AECOC).
